The book "Mantas Alentejanas - perpetuar o saber fazer" by Guida Fonseca, Alexandra Marques and Mizette Nielsen is intended as an instruction manual to make it possible to recreate the traditional patterns of Alentejo blankets on a small loom that fits into any home.
In Alentejo there were once dozens of weavers whose main activity, alongside agricultural work, was the production of blankets for shepherds' clothing and bedding. Hand-weaving in the region dates back to the 14th century. The structural and chromatic patterns used in Alentejo blankets come from this ancestral tradition. The know-how associated with them has been passed down from generation to generation. But in the last 50 years there has been a profound transformation of the rural environment that threatens the perpetuation of this tradition. However, there are those who love this know-how. There are those who are interested in preserving the traditional patterns, recreating them according to a contemporary vision that makes use of new resources and skills, and who are looking for new everyday uses for the blankets.
