Bucos yarn

BUCOS is a very special yarn produced entirely by Ilídia Oliveira from the wool of a local flock of Bordaleira de Entre-Douro-e-Minho sheep. From the moment the sheep are shorn, Ilídia processes the wool from start to finish – from washing through to carding and spinning with a Portuguese spindle. It is a single-ply, irregular yarn with a rustic character. It is available in two colours: mottled, created by blending white and black wool during the carding stage, and natural white. 
This yarn was originally designed by Helena Cardoso in 2011, initially for use in the scarves produced at Casa da Lã, in Bucos.

ABOUT ILIDIA: Ilídia Oliveira lives and works in Bucos, a small village in the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto. Since she was a little girl, she has been working with wool, from sheep to loom. She is also part of the Mujeres de Bucos, a group of women who regularly gather at the Casa da Lã to work the wool and is considered the best spinner of all. Since 2011 I have been recording her work and her know-how, which she has shared with me unreservedly over these years and it was thanks to her that I took the first correct steps in the wanderings of Wool. If you've been following Saber Fazer for some time, you might think you don't know Ilídia, but in fact you've seen her here many times, illustrated by Maria Helena Silva, on our postcards, on the website, in our studio.
