Hydrated lime is the common name for Calcium Hydroxide (CaOH2), one of the ingredients used in the creation of the organic Vat of indigo 1-2-3, which serves to raise the pH. By alkalizing the vat, hydrated lime makes it possible to reduce indigo and, consequently, dye textiles with this pigment.
In Saber Fazer we also use calcium hydroxide as an alkalizing agent in the process of extracting pigment from fresh indigo plants. The choice of using calcium hydroxide is due to the fact that it is a non-toxic compound for the environment and very safe to handle during dyeing processes.
It is available in bags of 100gr or 500gr. It is advisable to use a mask and gloves when handling this powder, as it is thin and light and is easily inhaled. Although it is not toxic, hydrated lime is slightly abrasive, as it has a high pH.
Hydrated lime should be kept in airtight bags to prevent carbonation.
