Festa do Outono 2026 - Textile experimentation activities

On 26 and 27 September, as part of the Festa do Outono at the Serralves Foundation, Saber Fazer will organise and run a number of hands-on textile activities. Taking part is free, and the activities run continuously throughout the event's opening hours.

Conceived by Saber Fazer for the Festa do Outono, these activities let visitors come into contact with small-scale manufacturing techniques in a practical, relaxed way, creating moments of learning, discovery and enjoyment all at once, something that has proved a great success in recent editions. They are run by craftspeople and professionals working in the field, which gives them a particular character.

All the activities are suitable for every kind of visitor, from young children to adults already experienced in the subject.

Activity 1: Working with wool

A demonstration of, and hands-on introduction to, the whole process of preparing wool fibre, from sheep to yarn.

Each participant will have the chance to learn more about the Bordaleira de Entre-Douro-e-Minho sheep breed and its wool, as well as carding processes and spinning techniques with spindle and spinning wheel. This activity is run by Alice Bernardo.

Activity 2: Felting

A hands-on introduction to wet felting, in which each participant can make their own piece using this ancestral technique. This activity is run by Ana Rita de Arruda.

Activity 3: Weaving

A hands-on introduction to weaving on multi-shaft looms, in which each participant can try weaving and learn the basic principles of this cloth-making technique. This activity is run by Joana Manarte.
