Introduction to Ceramics - 14 March 2026

This introductory workshop aims to provide a solid foundation in ceramic practice through the creation of an ocarina, an object that is both functional and aesthetic.
In the first phase, participants will be given a brief presentation to help them understand the raw material in question and the means available to work with it. In addition, they will be able to consult books on the subject and observe pieces that will be available.
Next, by constructing a simple clay object, they will be invited to develop the knowledge they have acquired in a sustained manner.
All materials (ceramic paste, engobes, tools) and firing (in an electric kiln) are included.

⁠- What is clay – summary of the different types and characteristics;
- Clay and ceramic paste;
- The main ways of working with ceramic paste and the necessary tools – hand modelling, slab, rollers, potter's wheel and moulding.
- Brief introduction to ceramic painting – engobes, glazes, other surface treatments and finishes.
- Drying clay and its different stages.
- Ceramic firing, overview of different kilns.
- What is an ocarina – explanation and handling of some models.
- Shaping an ocarina from a ball of clay that will be hollowed out and modelled based on the models provided.
- Focus on the construction of the air inlet and additional holes (optional).
- Final decoration with textures and engobes.

Notes:

- Once finished, the ocarinas will need to dry and undergo subsequent firing (carried out by the instructor), so they will take around 15 days to be ready for collection.

- We recommend wearing old clothes/an apron if you don't want to get dirty.
