This introductory workshop aims to provide a solid foundation in the practice of ceramics through the creation of a mug with an infuser – a functional object that allows participants to test most of the fundamental principles of the craft.

To begin with, participants will attend a brief presentation to help them understand the raw material involved and the tools available for working with it. In addition, they will be able to consult books on the subject and examine examples of work on display.

Next, by creating a simple object from clay, they will be encouraged to develop the knowledge they have acquired in a sustained manner.

All materials (clay, engobes, tools) and firings (bisque and glaze in an electric kiln) are included.

Contents

- What is clay – an overview of the different types and characteristics;
- Clay and ceramic slip;
- The main techniques for working with ceramic slip and the tools required – hand-building, slab building, coiling, the potter’s wheel and moulding.
- A brief introduction to ceramic painting – engobes, glazes, other surface treatments and finishes.
- The drying of clay and its different stages.
- Ceramic firing: an overview of the different kilns.
- The mug and the infuser – explanation and handling of some models.
- Shaping the various elements using the slab technique – guide rulers and a roller;
- Cutting out the various shapes using a template (a cutting guide for the required planned shapes);
- Decorating surfaces with textures, by removing material and/or painting with engobes;
- Final assembly of the elements.

Notes:

- Once finished, the pieces will need to dry and undergo subsequent firing (carried out by the instructor), so they will take around 15 days to be ready for collection.
- We recommend wearing old clothes/an apron if you don't want to get dirty.
