Alkanet Root (Alkanna tinctoria)

Alkanet is a herbaceous plant from the Boraginaceae family. Its roots are used to extract a violet-colored red wine.
The dye it contains is not water-soluble, so it is necessary to soak the root in alcohol for at least 1 or 2 weeks to extract the dye. Alkaline solutions produce more violet colours, while acidic environments produce more reddish tones. The pH of the solution can be checked with our pH strips .
